Here's the complete Grammy
Award winners' list in 100 categories. A reading of Harry Potter's
prose, and sleeve notes for a jazz album are among the less-hyped
winners
The Grammy awards have just been announced in Los Angeles.
We checked the list to see if there was any Indian angle. The search
result was zero! Vishwamohan Bhatt had, with the guitarist Ry
Cooder, once won a Grammy in the World Music category, but this time
around, there's no recognisably Indian name on the list.
The
Grammy institution, supported by American music
industry, hosts the most glittering music awards show every
year.
About its effect on India, we heard this story from a
music organiser who lived in Calcutta for a several
decades:
"We invited Vishwamohan Bhatt from Jaipur for a
concert in Calcutta. He came and played, and we paid him Rs
750. The following year he won the Grammy. We invited him
again, but his fee had risen to Rs 75,000! We couldn't afford
him any more."
A remote Indian connection is that Taj Mahal,
the black singer who won the Best Contemporary Blues Album
award for Shoutin' in Key,
once recorded, for Waterlily Acoustics, with Vishwamohan Bhatt and
Chitravina N Ravikiran.
The Grammies are presented in
many categories, most of which never make it to the mainstream
papers. Category 69, for instance, is devoted
to 'Best Spoken Word Album for Children', which goes this year to
Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (J K Rowling), read out by Jim
Dale. Another award goes to the best opera recording. Orchestra
arrangement and sleeve notes also get noticed and honoured. The best
film or television soundtrack also gets a Grammy.
Here's the
complete list. Most Grammy titles are available with Tower Records
