Book on tonal shifts
now in English
Srutis and Srutibheda , a book that musicologists had been anticipating for some time, has hit the stands.
Eureka! It's 22 srutis Interview with Dr Varadarangan
Dr K Varadarangan, mathematician-musicologist, first wrote the book in Kannada, and then revised it and embarked on an English translation, encouraged by the response to his work from readers of The Music Magazine. He feels his discoveries could well alter the way musicologists have been calculating tonal frequencies.
"I received dozens of messages after the magazine wrote about it, and many of them suggested that I do an English translation," says Dr Varadarangan.
The book was formally released recently by G Jayalal, station director, All India Radio, Bangalore. The release was part of the 21st rhythm festival of Percussive Arts Centre, at the JSS Auditorium in Jayanagar, Bangalore.
Dr H Narasimhaiah presented the centre's Palani Subramanya Pillai award to violinist Lalgudi G Jayaraman.
Dr Varadarangan's book, published by Lalitha Prakashana, is priced at Rs 100. It is available at: Lalitha Prakashana, No. 107/1, 2nd Main, Mountjoy Extension, Hanumanthanagar, Bangalore-19. Ph: (080) 6525516. You could also write to Dr Varadarangan for more details.
